With summer comes tortoises 🐢! Like something f With summer comes tortoises 🐢!
Like something from an ‘Animals of Prehistoric Times’ book, the leopard tortoise is an extraordinary and fascinating animal. Tortoises themselves come from an incredibly old group of reptiles that date back about 220 million years. Thanks to all that evolution, they are highly adapted and extremely resilient.
.
👀 Learning point: The leopard tortoise has a super-gnarly toenail which gives it a very secure grip, making it a great climber of rocks. Not only that, it’s also the only tortoise species that can float and swim (slowly, of course) and can go underwater for up to 10 minutes at a time.
.
For us, tortoises epitomise wisdom. Their slow and steady pace is a lesson in patience and perseverance; that your speed doesn’t matter - forward is forward.
.
📷 Thanks to the fabulous and talented @jake_morris_films for these photos 🫶.

Jake is a student on our Nature Enthusiast Course, where you'll learn all about the small creatures, as well as the big fancy ones.
